English
At St Bridget's, we want our children to be thriving readers, writers and speakers through our ambitious and progressive curriculum. Children read a wide range of high quality texts by a range of authors, linking to topics and culture where appropriate. We want our children to be able to communicate in a range of contexts and have the confidence and ability to do so, to support them on wherever their learning journey takes them next.
At St Bridget's, we use RWI in EYFS and KS1 to ensure children get off to a flying start with reading and writing. Our children love phonics, and these sessions are delivered by trained RWI staff members. We continue to follow the RWI approach throughout the school with RWI spellings.
In KS1 and KS2, we have designed our own bespoke learning journeys that is fit for our setting and children. Within this, we have created and nurtured a love for writing, and are very proud of the stamina our children have. We also work hard to allow the children to develop a fluent, legible handwriting style and take care with presentation of their work.
We understand the importance of developing English skills in wider curriculum areas, so we have planned opportunities for extended writing across the curriculum.
Our growing commitment to school-wide oracy gives children the space and safety to develop their critical thinking, explanations and confidence. We want our children to be articulate speakers across a range of contexts and environments by the time they move on at the end of Year 6.
