Sports Premium
Here at St Bridget’s we believe that all children can find at least one physical activity that they will enjoy. Exploring sport, at school, is part of our ‘Letting Our Lights Shine’ ethos. We value sports and physical activities, not just for keeping healthy, but for the social benefits and team skills. We encourage the children to have a positive mindset towards competing. This includes being a good sport, improving and losing well, as well as celebrating winning and success. We feel proud that the school currently has the Gold Games Mark and is working towards the Platinum award.
Being located close to the sea, we start teaching swimming in Key Stage 1, earlier than many schools, as we know that safety around water is so important in this location. In year six the children get open- water safety training, often in Bassenthwaite Lake, to learn how to be safe and how to use life-saving equipment when wild swimming.
Any child who needs extra swimming lessons gets the opportunity for additional practice too.
Every other year, Key Stage Two (juniors) have an outward-bound residential trip and every year there is an opportunity to canoe and climb in the lakes with The Youth Harbour Trust. Infants and EYFS get out into the lakes with visits to Whinlatter, Keswick, Brockhole and Derwent Water.
Team sports and competitions are important to us. We often have matches with Lowca Community School and attend competitions, events and taster sessions organised by Whitehaven Academy. We have had recent success in the county cross-country event.
We practice a range of sports, dance and gymnastics through our rich curriculum. This enables children to build to previous skills and improve. Our extra-curricular offer includes sports such as judo, cricket and rounders, and an opportunity to take part in the U Dance competition on stage in Carlisle.
